DEAD END STREET SIGNING POLICY
On November 30, 1999, the Selectboard adopted
a motion for the creation of a dead end street signing policy. Their motion stated that dead end streets will
be signed upon request from: (1)
people on the dead end street, (2) the Department of
Public Works,
or
(3) the Traffic Safety
Advisory Committee.
The sign wording will be determined by the TSAC
but will be based on “the way the world is going”, meaning what
is the experts’ choice for dead end street sign language. The signs are to be installed on a breakaway post in conformance
with the MUTCD, on the street name post, and visible to oncoming
traffic if possible.
After considering the Selectboard’s directions
regarding sign wording, the TSAC recommends using “NO OUTLET”.
Again abiding by the Selectboard’s guidance,
the TSAC recommends (in conformance with the MUTCD) the signs be
placed on the right of the dead end street about 50 feet from the
intersection. Generally, 24" x 24" signs will be
used, except a 36" x 36" sign will be used when the main
(through) street is a high speed road.
