The Barre Town Department of Public Works has responsibility for the Town highways, sewerage system, and water distribution system. The DPW also maintains the Town's entire fleet of vehicles and motor equipment. The Town Engineer's Office is included in this category. There are two mechanics that maintain eighty-plus pieces of Town equipment year round.

Summer construction mainteance and preventative measures account for much of the work. However, the staff of seventeen (17) also does roadway retreatment, gravel road projects, maintenance of the compost site on Holden Road, excavation in the gravel pit for winter sand and gravel for road maintenance and construction, and many other various duties during the summer months to keep things running smoothly.

Their role in assuring all prep work (raising/lowering manholes, constructing appropriate drainage systems, and generally facilitating road project needs) is complete is invaluable in the road paving process. The post pavement work is yet another primary function of this department (i.e.: restoring driveway aprons, shoulder work, and general roadway landscape work).

In the winter, crews concentrate on keeping roadways clear and safe. During any given storm there are nine trucks out on the road plowing. Crews are often working as early as 3 a.m. to make roads safe for our morning travel. The department spreads around 2000 tons of salt any given year with three different salt trucks. Ongoing work to keep the fire hydrants and bridges (Bridge Street - Snowbridge Road) clear is also necessary. Their commitment to safety and functionality of Town property and infrastructure is truly what makes this department so special.
