This spring, the Barre Town Recreation Department sponsored their first team of runners in the Vemront City Marathon relay that was held in Burlington on May 26, 2002.
The Barre Town Athletics team covered the 26.2 miles in 3 hours 33 minutes and 35 seconds, which placed them 75th out of 376 teams in the mixed open division.
The team members were Phil Acebo, Linda Hallinger, Andrea McLaughlin, and Carl Rogers. Unfortunately, Phil was sidelined by a last minute injury.
The Recreation Department would like to sponsor 2 teams in next years race, possibly a mixed open and a mixed masters team. There is also a coroporate team division where all runners are employees of one company, school, or organization. The relay teams can have between 2 to 5 runners, and the distance of the relay legs ranges from 3 miles to 7 miles. The relay field is limited to 600 teams, and the registration, which is scheduled to open Novembe 4th, usually fills quickly.
