The service area includes the towns of Barre, Berlin, Washington, Orange, Topsham, East Montpelier, Calais, and Plainfield; 292 square miles.

There are approximately 18,000 residents in the eight towns.

EMS responds to approximately 3600 calls per year; 1500 of those are non-emergency transports (inter-facility transfers).

There are two 24-hour emergency crews, and a third crew covering from 8 am to 6 pm monday through friday. The Auxiliary crew(Third) has the primary responsibility of transporting non-emergency patients and secondarily, emergency coverage if one of the two emergency crews answers a call for service.

There are two primary ambulances, the Auxiliary (third crew) ambulance, and two back-up ambulances for additional calls and long-distance transfers.

Field paramedics and a mobile intensive care unit(MICU) are two proposals currently being reviewed. The feasibility of staffing of each emergency crew with a paramedic is being studied, as well as, the staffing of the MICU with nurse(RN) and critical care Paramedic crews.

The staff is also involved in several community service activities that include; elementary school orientations, welfare visitations, safety fairs and
special events coverage.
