I would like to take this opportunity to raise everyone's awareness of the dangers of speeding.
With newly paved roads and school soon to be in session, the number of pedestrians and bikers increases tremendously.
More than 6.4 million crashes were reported in the year 2000. According to statistics, this is an increase of 1.8% over the previous year. Speed (defined as exceeding the posted speed limit or driving too fast for conditions) is a factor in nearly one-third of all fatal motor vehicle crashes! Speeding reduces the amount of available time to stop or avoid a crash -- increasing the likelihood of the severity of the crash once it occurs.
Take a few moments each day to think about how you want other drivers to drive in your neighborhood. Be observant of the posted speed limits; they are there for everyone's safety. Also be aware of what is going on around you at all times. It only takes a split second for a child or pet to run out into the road!
This time of year you will see the Barre Town Highway crews, as well as other crews, working in and along the roadway. These work sites are posted in advance stating WORKERS AHEAD or CONSTRUCTION AREA SPEED LIMIT 15 M.P.H. Drivers must be sure to heed the warnings. None of us would like a vehicle driving through our office or workstation at 35 m.p.h. or faster. These construction area work zones can be posted for a slower speed limit and failure to obey this doubles the fine you would receive.
The Police Department received a grant to purchase a radar trailer. This mobile unit can be placed on any road or street in town. We have found this trailer can make a difference in getting the attention of the drivers and making them conscious of the speed limit.
If you are experiencing speeding problems in your neighborhood, please feel free to contact me or Corporal William Dodge at the Barre Town Police Department. Together we can make our streets and roadways safer.
