EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
HIGHLIGHTS

The Town Manager/Director may invoke emergency powers
to carry out the town manager’s duties as stated in the charter
and ordinances. These emergency powers include promulgation of regulations
that could:
1.
Restrict the movement of vehicles to facilitate emergency
response
2.
Restrict people form areas deemed hazardous or vulnerable
3.
Be necessary for preserving public peace, safety and health
4.
Could, after given widespread circulation, carry same penalties
as town ordinances.

All town employees must participate in emergency
response activities, provided the assignment(s) are similar in nature
to their regular employment.
·
Citizen volunteers would receive all immunities granted
under state law of the time.
·
The chairman acts as the department head of emergency
management.
·
The EOC is located in the Municipal Building and
access is restricted during an emergency.
·
The Selectboard Meeting Room in the Municipal Building
has been designated as the press briefing room.
·
Designated emergency shelters are located at:
1.
The East Barre Fire Station
2.
The Saint Sylvester Church
3.
The Barre Town School
4.
The Knights of Colombus
(in
the implementation phase).
·
All town buildings have emergency power sources.
·
A public alert and warning system is in place. For
immediate alert in small areas emergency personnel may go door to
door or use public address systems. The emergency broadcast system
(radio and television) would be utilized.
For long-term events the local newspaper will be used.
